The best leaders are servants
Leadership is a calling that requires a blend of vision, compassion, and integrity. Great Christian leaders inspire, guide, and uplift those around them by embodying the teachings of Christ.
They lead with integrity, compassion, and a deep sense of purpose, influencing others to grow in their faith and make a positive impact.
The Bible is full of examples of exemplary leaders with Jesus being the example for all. Here are some essential qualities that define what a great Christian leader is composed of:
1. Strong Faith
Foundation: A great Christian leader has an unshakeable faith in God, trusting Him in all circumstances. This faith provides a firm foundation for decision-making and guidance.
Example: They rely on prayer and scripture for guidance and encourage others to trust in God’s plan, even in difficult times.
Biblical Example: Joshua displayed unwavering faith when he led the Israelites into the Promised Land, relying on God’s promises and instructions.
2. Humility
Servant Leadership: Jesus exemplified humility by washing His disciples’ feet, showing that true leadership is about serving others.
Example: Humble leaders are willing to admit mistakes, seek advice, and value the contributions of others without seeking personal glory.
Key Verse: Philippians 2:3-4 instructs, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”
3. Integrity
Consistency: A great Christian leader is consistent in words and actions, reflecting Christ-like character in all areas of life.
Example: They keep their promises, act ethically in all situations, and serve as a role model for honesty and righteousness.
Biblical Example: Daniel demonstrated integrity by remaining faithful to God even when faced with the threat of the lion’s den.
4. Vision
God-Given Vision: A great leader has a clear, God-given vision for their ministry and/or organization and can inspire others to pursue it.
Example: They communicate their vision effectively, setting goals and creating a sense of shared purpose within their community and organization.
Biblical Example: Nehemiah had a vision to rebuild Jerusalem’s walls and inspired the people to join him in this significant task.
5. Compassion
Empathy and Care: Compassionate leaders understand and care for the needs of those they lead, following Jesus’ example of empathy and love.
Example: They listen actively, offer support, and take action to help others in practical ways, reflecting Christ’s love.
Key Verse: Colossians 3:12 says, “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”
6. Wisdom
Godly Wisdom: Great leaders seek wisdom from God through prayer and the study of His Word, making decisions that align with His will.
Example: They follow biblical principles, seek counsel from godly mentors, and carefully consider the impact of their decisions.
Biblical Example: Solomon prayed for wisdom to lead his people, and God granted him unmatched wisdom, which became evident in his judgments and leadership.
7. Courage
Boldness: Courageous leaders stand firm in their convictions, even in the face of opposition or challenges.
Example: They have the ability to confront fear, pain, danger, uncertainty, or intimidation, despite being fearful or uncertain.
Biblical Example: Esther showed remarkable courage by approaching King Xerxes to save her people, despite the fact that she could be punished or killed.
8. Perseverance
Endurance: Perseverance is essential for overcoming obstacles and remaining steadfast in the mission God has given.
Example: They remain resilient in the face of adversity, trusting in God’s strength and encouraging others to stay the course.
Example: Paul endured numerous hardships, yet remained dedicated to spreading the Gospel and encouraging the early church.
9. Accountability
Transparency: Great leaders are accountable to God and others. They are open to feedback and willing to be held responsible for their actions.
Example: They establish accountability structures within their leadership, ensuring transparency and fostering trust.
Key Verse: Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Accountability helps leaders grow and remain grounded.
10. Encouragement
Building Others Up: Christian leaders encourage and uplift those they lead, helping them to grow in their faith and reach their potential.
Example: They use their platform to build those who work under them, they choose their words wisely and encourage others to grow in their knowledge of God.
